Choose one of our three major critical works: Hawthorne’s “The Custom House,” Poe’s “The Philosophy of Composition,” or Melville’s “Hawthorne and His Mosses.” Come up with 1) the writer’s definition of art (what does it do? what is it for?) 2) the artist’s job (what is his/her relationship to ‘truth” or to his/her audience) and 3) the feelings for the popular marketplace in the work (for it or against it?). Develop a thesis that states how the critical work exemplifies the writer’s idea of the place of literature in American society.
